Some historical homes have terne metal roofs and these need to be painted with oil based paint.

Choose a paint that s right for your metal roof. Galvanized metal roofs are usually painted with acrylic based paint. This may be easier if you pour some of the roof coating into a paint pan. Find either oil based or acrylic based paint at your local home improvement store.

You may also want to seal off the rusty area with a commercial rust sealer. It is important to follow the directions on the roof coating as to how thick the coating should be applied and how many square feet a container of roof coating should cover.
